Pilotlite Picks

Helpful and informative sites for the Palm handheld owner. Download shareware, read reviews, and get juicy gossip that make your palms sweat!

Note: Many of these sites also sell accessories or let you download software. I list them here instead of in my Shop Around page because I consider these "content sites" that do a good job of providing reviews and information, or because they provide a good value for the time you spend visiting them. In essense, you may discover yourself going back to visit these sites over and over again.

A screen shot of Visor Central's Web siteVisorCentral: One of the best sites dedicated specifically to the Handspring Visor, VisorCentral is actively maintained by a core handful of dedicated folks who enthusiastically review all the new gadgets as they roll out of production.

Includes gadget reviews, links to related news articles, list of all Springboard Modules for the Visor, bulletin board, and an online accessories store.

A screenshot of the PalmGear Web sitePalmGear: This is the place to go if you want to download anything for your Palm OS PDA. There's so much stuff here that your mind boggles... it sometimes reminds me of a huge Costco warehouse, with rows and rows of shareware. The site is organized so that the detailed view of each product includes exactly the information you need, such as version number, download size, other products by the same developer (and developer's Web site/email address), minimum OS requirements, file sizes, cost (if any), screen shots (if any), as well as how many others have downloaded the item.

There is an easy search capability that lets you look up subjects as well, in case you want to download something but don't know what the actual product is called.

Includes reviews by users, as well as Top 50 Monthly, Top 50 Downloads, The Essentials, and Gear's Choice. The Essentials section is particularly great for beginners looking to load up their PDA with indispensable and handy applications.

A screenshot of MemoWare Web siteMemoWare: You've heard of "e-books" -- electronic books that you can read on your PC, laptop, PDA, or dedicated e-book reader. With "MemoWare -- the PDA Document Repository", you never have buy another book again! Well okay, maybe not. But MemoWare carries so many titles that it would take you five years to go read through all of the titles (doing nothing else). Although MemoWare has a large list of fiction titles (ranging from Agatha Christie to Shakespeare), you can also find a lot of nonfiction titles as well.

Navigating around MemoWare is an easy matter of choosing categories. However some categories are so large there are many pages to scroll through of nothing but titles.

A screenshot of O'Reilly PalmPilot Center Web siteO'Reilly PalmPilot Center: For some folks anything by O'Reilly is going to smack of geekdom. But this uber-computer book publisher has a wonderful section within its Web site called the PalmPilot Center.

From the Center, you can navigate through a number of interesting nuggets, such as David Pogue's* Top Ten List of handy Palm tips, and even sample pages of his wildly popular book, PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide.

*[Let me tell you something about David Pogue. If you ever meet him, bow at his feet for writing wonderful computer manuals, and thank him for evangelizing the importance of good documentation.]
