Travelite Magazine Winter 2000

There's a shift in the wind!

If you're a regular reader of the Travelite Magazine, I thank you for returning to read my Winter issue, and for waiting so long for this issue to come out.

The in-between "down" time has been very busy for me, but one thing I promised was that this issue would be about travel planning with electronic organizers, and that is definitely what you'll get here!

You might notice that this issue's format is a little different from what you've seen in the past. This is because these pages are going to serve as the premier articles of a brand new Web site I am creating. Pilotlite should go live before 2001, and contain the articles you see here in this issue. Pilotlite.org serves as a sister site to Travelite.org, and is dedicated to regular folks who want to learn how to use a handheld electronic organizer to help with their travel plans.

You will see other changes here at Travelite.org as well. With my work on Pilotlite, as well as my travel columns for MousePlanet.com, I have decided to scale back these Travelite Magazine issues to a more manageable workload (after all, I still have a day job on top of all this!). Beginning in January 2001, the magazine articles will combine with my monthly Packing List email newsletter.

If you are already a subscriber, you will continue to get monthly email tips from me. Periodically, these "tips" will be more like the type of articles you are used to reading in this magazine. As a loyal reader, I promise that you will always be the first to get these tips/articles from me. These tips/articles will then appear on the Travelite splash page (usually a few weeks to a month after they goes out in email). Past articles will be archived at this site.

Hopefully by spreading out my story assignments over the year, I won't have to go crazy trying to meet my self-imposed deadlines for releasing a full issue.

Welcome to the handheld world

If you're not a high-flying professional with a busy schedule, you might think a Palm, Handspring, or Pocket PC-type of electronic handheld organizer, or "PDA" (Personal Digital Assistant) is not really for you.

PDAs, priced as low as $150, are both affordable and convenient enough for regular folks to organize their everyday lives. PDAs are particularly useful for planning trips and vacations, since you cut down on the amount of paperwork you have to carry around on your trip.

I've been espousing the traveling-light philosophy online for over four years now, and nothing has helped me organize and lighten my load than the Handspring Visor Deluxe that I got in December 1999. I realized then that a PDA is one of the keys to traveling light in this hectic, electronic world.

Join me as I walk you through the basics, and convince you why a PDA is the way to travel.
